Like most USC faculty, I get a lot of email asking whether I'm accepting new students or interns. Unfortunately, I'm not able to respond to all those emails individually, in particular during application season. Here's what you need to know:

• PhD applicants: I'm always looking for outstanding PhD students. However, I can't tell you of your chances by email --- there simply isn't enough information. Unless we already know each other, either directly or through a mutual professional acquaintance, your best bet is to apply and mention your interest in working with me on your application. In most cases, writing me directly will not help your application, especially because admissions at USC CS is done by a committee.
• Summer interns: Unfortunately, I don't have any positions for summer interns.
• Directed research credits for grad students: I'm not able to supervise your directed research credits unless we already have an existing research relationship, or you are directly recommended to me by someone I know. If you are at USC and want to get involved in the theory group, your best bet is to take theory classes so we get to know you, start coming to theory lunch, and gradually forge a working relationship with students and faculty in the theory group, myself included. We are very welcoming, it's just that I don't have the time to say yes to someone I don't know.
• Undergrads interested in research: If you are an undergrad at USC interested in research in theoretical CS, and you have an A in 270 and/or have taken graduate-level theory classes (e.g. 670 or 675), please do email me. Even if I can't work with you directly for whatever reason, I can likely connect you with someone who would be happy to advise you.
